Athens-Clarke Squirrel Situation: David, I don't want to trap or kill red squirrels but wondered if you could answer a question about them for me. I am 84 years old and we love to watch red squirrels at our feeders here in Maine, as we have done so for many years. However, some time last week we were watching a TV program by one of these guys that do extreme ventures to rid people's homes of all kind of rodents. I wish I had got the TV guys name but I didn't. Anyway, he made a very strong point of something I have never heard of before. He said don't ever get bit by a red squirrel because they will poison you and there is no known cure for their type of poison. Do you know if there is any such danger from a red squirrel or not? I sure can't find any thing in any of my animal books to that affect and I have never heard of it before from any other source in my 84 years of living in the Maine woods from Northern Presque Isle to Southern Lebanon and places in between. I just couldn't believe that a program of this type would allow such a statement if it were not true. Hope you have time to respond to my question in your busy day. Thank you much!

My response: I have never heard of any danger from a Red Squirrel Bite, and I can't find any research indicating that Red Squirrels have any type of poison. The television program gave bad information, maybe as a joke, or just for dramatic effect.
