Charleston Squirrel Situation: David, Read your article and want to try intimidation method. Should I use a loud radio, ultrasonic? What works best? What I know: Lots of tracks through the fiber glass insulation in my attic. Looks like they or it tunnels under the insulation because the tracks just disappear with no jump off place. All entry areas seem secure from the outside of the house around the roof line. There is small fan installed in the roof visible from inside the attic that has a space large enough for a squirrel to enter with tracks directly under it. I see a metal cover that covered the electrical wires has been dislodged. No wire damage observed yet... Scratching and scraping noise is heard from inside the house for brief periods of time then it goes quiet. The noise returns through out the day and seems to be limited to one location. I suspect the critter is a mother squirrel with a nest and possibly some young. Walk way in the attic is one long plank through the center of the roof line. I can not get to the area where the noise is coming from inside the attic. I have set up in the attic for more than ½ hour very quietly in the dark (with a flash light) and have not heard or observed any critter movement. No droppings have been observed, Sincerely Doug

My response: Neither loud radio or ultrasonic will drive them out, but go ahead and try. You've got to find out how they are getting in, remove them via trapping or exclusion, and seal the openings up afterward. Make sure the young are big enough to go outside, and into the traps. Have you considered hiring a professional wildlife company?

David - Thanks for the 2nd follow up. It's now April 10, 2011 and the little critters have been in the attic since January 2011. Four days ago I spread granules on top of the attic insulation where I think the squirrely pest are nesting. The granules were advertised to chase away Deer and rabbits from the garden with out injuring them. I found the stuff at Wal-Mart in the garden department. I have not heard them for three days now. I will put a screen cover the small roof fan sticking out of the top of my roof where I think they were coming and going. OTHER: I have a second much larger fan located inside the house on the ceiling. I use this separate fan to flush the attic and house air out through the attic roof vents. This fan makes a lot of noise and it may have played a part in intimidating the critters. I started using it the same day I spread the granules. I hope the little ones were old enough to run out with the mother.
