Cincinnati Squirrel Situation: Dave, just finished reading your article on squirrels in the attic. I'm a handyman for a couple that own 35 houses in the city of Cincinnati OH. Your wrong on saying squirrels will never enter a trap in a attic. I've set two traps in two different house's and both times caught TWO squirrels at the same time in both traps. The secret to my success is putting the traps up for two weeks, opened and not baited. I then come back in two weeks and apply peanut butter on a small piece of cardboard, under the trip button. this was my first and second try at squirrel removal. I'm about to repeat this again on a house tomorrow that is experiencing a squirrel problem. I was not aware of the laws in my area, but I will be checking them after this E-mail. I did take them about 10 miles away to a woods before releasing.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you when you were the one offering to help. I keep forgetting to send this. We built this house only 3 years ago. ACS said they would "set one way, disinfect, repair soffit ,start mouse program bait in attic and basement. 4 weeks with 2 visits." They also said they would offer to pull insulation off soffits since they said it needed it" They said the problem was flying squirrels also. Cincinnati wildlife removal said they would put wire mesh around all soffits after repair and also do the trap thing in the attic. We have only heard these animals twice in one year. Our house is kind of large--I think 3000 square feet on each floor and maybe we are getting the nice neighborhood increase. Right now we feel we may not need this expense.

My parents own a house in Cincinnati OH. I went up for holiday weekend and to my horror discovered they had hired a pest control company to capture and kill a mom and nest of baby squirrels. I could not figure out what I was hearing all night long with squirrels banging around in metal cages... then the next day they sounded like they were crying in the very hot sun. The painter at the house across the street pointed out where the cages were and said he had watched the babies suffer for two days.. His ladder could not reach the cage. I called a local company -- and they said the squirrels would be killed anyways. I feel complicit because I could not free the poor animals and really disturbed that my parents would not have a/ been more careful - they told me they noticed a big hole in the roof early in the fall! and b/ had hired a pest company vs trying to capture the squirrels and relocate them. Do you recommend any good outfits in Cincinnati area? Very sad indeed.
